As a University, our needs
and demands for improved e-learning features cannot be met
by our current course management software, WebCT Campus Edition
4. For the past two years Academic Affairs and faculty users
of CE4 have been looking for the best option to replace CE4
when the time came. Through that research it was discovered
there were four options; WebCT, Blackboard, eCollege, and
Desire2Learn. After site visits with other universities, discussions
with the Higher Education Commission on-site team members,
and WebCT/Blackboard reps, it was confirmed that the best
next step for us would be the FerrisConnect package. It is important
to note that during the review process Blackboard announced
its intention to purchase WebCT narrowing the field of option
to three. We believe that software available from eCollege
and Desire2Learn lack the ability to meet anticipated demands
for online learning to the extent that FerrisConnect offers.
Some of the features that are particularly appealing include
scalability, ability to track and monitor user traffic and
load peaks, better data assessment tools, as well as improved
ease of use for instructors.
Learning Management Systems such as FerrisConnect are used
by faculty to serve students and Academic Affairs assumed
overall responsibility for the project. A state-of-the-art
teaching and learning platform consisting of:
- Virtual Course Environment for course preparation, delivery,
and management
- Community Manager for supporting diverse operating groups
on campus
- Learning Object Manager for distributing and reusing academic
content
