Keys to Remember When Teaching Adult Learners

  • Their time outside of class is limited

  • Their first priority may not be your course

  • Day care may be an issue

  • Knowing why they need to learn what you are teaching is their number one priority

  • They have much to contribute, especially in terms of real world applications
    o
They want their expertise to be recognized

  • They may need reassurance that they can compete in your course
    o
Example, if they have been away from formal schooling for some time

  • You may need to be more flexible in due dates and timelines

  • You will need to be more flexible in your availability to them outside of class
    o
With home phone calls or e-mail accessibility

  • They need your recognition
    o
For you to know their names quickly and appreciate their life experiences

  • They want to have input into the content and process of the course
o       Example, what do they need to know? What do they already know?
