| Q. |
Why can't I connect to the Internet? |
| A. |
If you can't connect to the Internet you should check your IP Address.
To check your IP Address, click on the start button and then click on the "Run" icon. In the window that opens type "cmd" then click "OK." In the next window that opens type "ipconfig" and press enter. Now some text should appear and look for the line that says, "IP Address." There should be a series of numbers next to it like "123.45.678.910."
To check your IP Address using Mac OS X, start by opening the "System Preferences." In the System preferences window click the "Network" icon. In the Network window that opens select your connection and your IP address will be shown.
- Your IP Address should start with 161. If your IP address does start with 161 and your Internet is still not working then there may a problem with your computer, and you should call the Technology Assistance Center at ext.4TAC or 231.591.4822.
- If your IP Address starts with 127, there may be a problem with your ethernet cable. You should check to make sure that your cable is properly connected, and if your problem persists try to connect a different ethernet cable.
- If your IP Address starts with 192, then you may be connected to a router. If you need to share your connection you should try using a hub or a switch. You can purchase a hub or a switch at STS, which is located in the West Building, or from a store that sells computer hardware. If you are trying to use a wireless connection you should be using a wireless access point instead of a wireless router. Wireless access points are also available for purchase from STS.
- If your IP Address starts with 169, the port in the wall you are trying to use is broken. You should call the Technology Assistance Center at ext.4TAC or 231.591.4822
- If your IP Address starts with any other three numbers besides 161, you should call the Technology Assistance Center at ext.4TAC or 231.591.4822 for help to resolve your problem.

| Q. |
What does Ferris recommend for new computer purchases? |
| A. |
Today's computers are used for more than just simple word processing, database, and spreadsheet capabilities. Some students require more advanced graphic intensive software programs on their computers such as AutoCAD, or desktop publishing programs like PageMaker. These programs run more efficiently on more powerful machines.
New technology has also made it possible for computers to be utilized as televisions, fax machines, answering machines, scanners, stereos, and arcade galleries. The more powerful a machine's processor, memory, and hard drive (in that order), the quicker the software applications will run.
For example, a student with a Pentium II or III processor will require more time to scan a picture/document than one with a Pentium IV processor, assuming that both machines have similar scanning hardware capabilities (not all computers have this hardware).
You should review your expected needs before purchasing a computer. If you are comfortable with using computers and enjoy pushing them to the limit, you will always want more power. On the other hand, if you are terrified of computers and see them as a necessary evil in modern society, then spending a substantial amount of money on options that you never expect to utilize is silly.
In any event, research your options carefully before making a purchase. Check into Pentium chips and compare with AMD and Celeron varieties. |

| Q. |
I'm taking a class this coming semester and I can't see the class in WebCT. Why can't I see my class in WebCT before it starts? |
| A. |
Classes in WebCT are managed by the instructor. You may not see classes in WebCT before the class actually starts if the instructor has not released the class to his or her students, or if the instructor has not added you as a member of the class yet. You should wait until class starts and then ask the instructor about not being able to see the class or its content in WebCT if you're having a problem. |
|
| Q. |
Why does WebCT keep crashing my browser? |
| A. |
If you are clicking on something inside WebCT and it is crashing your computer or web browser multiple times, then you should try to clear your cache.
To read instructions for clearing your cache in Microsoft Internet Explorer Click Here.
To clear your cache in Mozilla Firefox click on "Tools" in your browser's toolbar, and select "Options." In options click on the "Privacy" tab and click the tab that says "Cache," and click the "Clear Cache Now" button.
Now go back and try to click on what was crashing your browser, or computer, and try to click on it again. If you are still having problems call the Technology Assistance Center at ext.4TAC or 231-591-4822. |

| Q. |
Students being listed in a class, but not having access - for faculty use. |
| A. |
Every semester for the past couple of years we have experienced a recurring problem with students being listed in a WebCT course, but not having access.
This is caused by an instructor using the "Synchronize/update" student list feature when attempting to update their student lists in WebCT.
The solution is to remove the students from the course and to re-import them using the "Add multiple students" field - not "update or synchronize".
If there is graded material in the course it will be lost. If this is the case, a WebCT administrator needs to resolve the problem in order to preserve the grades.

Microsoft Office
| Q. |
How do I convert an Office 2007 document to be used in Office 2003 |
| A. |
There are a couple of ways of doing this. The first is when you save the file in Office 2007 as 97-2003 document. The other is to click on Office 2007 compatibility pack and then click dowload. This download will make it so, that Office 2003 will read Office 2007 documents. Note: Your computer may try to download this file automaticlly when you try to open an Office 2007 document in Office 2003.
To save the file for use in Office 2003 follow these steps.
- Click on the round icon in the uppper right hand corner of the screen
- Move the mouse over the "save as" option until the additional windows pops up
- Click on 97-2003 document
- Name your document
- Click Save

| Q. |
What if your Office 2007 spell checker doesn't seem to be working? |
| A. |
Problem: A document had obvious spelling errors, but Word didn’t flag them as I was typing. They also did not appear when I ran “spell check.” I tried the same document in both the 2003 and 2007 versions, neither worked.
Fix: In Word 2007:
- Open a document that has this problem
- Press Ctrl+A to select all of the text
- Click on Review tab
- In the Proofing box, click Set Language
- Choose your language
- Uncheck the "Detect language automatically" and "Do not check spelling or grammar" boxes
- Click OK
- Click on Office Button
- Select Word Options
- In the Proofing tab, check the "Check spelling as you type" and "Check grammar with spelling" boxes
- Uncheck the "Hide spelling errors in this document only" and "Hide grammar errors in this document only" boxes
- Click OK
- (YOU MAY NOT NEED THIS STEP) In your Windows registry, if the key "HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftShared ToolsProofing Tools1.0Override" exists, delete it.

Network
| Q. |
What kind of cable do I need to connect my computer to the network, and where can I get one? |
| A. |
You need an RJ45 cable with connectors on both ends. You may purchase a 14' cable from STS in the West Building or at one of the local computer stores. |
|
| Q. |
I live off campus and would like to connect to the University's network. |
| A. |
Students who reside off campus can obtain internet connectivity via a modem through an outside Internet Service Provider (ISP) or through a service provided by the University called Merit or MichNet. The charge for MichNet service is $40 a semester or $100 for a year. Arrangements for such service can be made through Calla Dean at Telecommunications (X2901...#7). Students living off campus currently can not access the user space on the University server. |
|
| Q. |
How much does it cost to connect to the network? |
| A. |
Each student who resides in University Housing is assessed a per semester connectivity fee which is incorporated into the cost of room and board. This allows for all residents to use the network through a connection in their room, computer labs in the halls, and the West Campus Community Center. Students wishing to connect their personal computers to the network are required to have a 3COM 10/100 Ethernet Card (or similar) installed in their computers. STS installs these cards for a fee. |
|
| Q. |
I am a Visual Communication major and therefore need a Mac operating system. How do I make my Mac compatible with the network? |
| A. |
You need a RJ45 Ethernet Connection on your machine and the ability to connect via TCP/IP. |
|
| Q. |
Can my roommate and I each have a computer in our room and connect to the network? |
| A. |
Space is very limited in the residence halls for two separate computer systems, and outlets for plugging in equipment are also a consideration. However, two computers can connect to the network by use of a three or four port switch which is then plugged into the wall jack. Then the two computers can be plugged into the switch. |
|
| Q. |
How do I change my login password? |
| A. |
Please refer to this web page for password changing instructions. |
|
Windows Vista
| Q. |
Having trouble viewing Microsoft Word documents in Windows Vista? |
| A. |
Problem: Windows Vista without Microsoft Word installed will not be able to open Word files properly.
Solution 1: The first solution would be to purchase a copy of Microsoft Office. Once installed all *.doc files will display correctly. The Microsoft Office Suite is available for students to purchase at the STS offices, located in the West building here on campus. Faculty and staff can purchase the Microsoft Office Suite at the Timme Center (CSS).
Solution 2: The second solution is to download “Word Viewer 2003”, a small application created by Microsoft to open and view Word files. Once downloaded and installed, the viewer allows users to open .doc files. They can view, copy, and paste the information into whatever word processing program they choose. To download “Word Viewer 2003” click the link below.
For any further assistance or questions please contact the TAC at extension 4822. |
