Network FAQ
Student Technology Services (STS)

What kind of cable do I need to connect my computer to the network? Where can I get one?
You need an RJ45 cable with connectors on both ends. You may purchase a 14' cable from STS at the West Bulding or at one of the local computer stores.
I live off campus and would like to connect to the University's network.
Students who reside off campus can obtain internet connectivity via a modem through an outside Internet Service Provider (ISP) or through a service provided by the University called Merit or MichNet. The charge for MichNet service is $40 a semester or $100 for a year. Arrangements for such service can be made through Calla Dean at Telecommunications (X2901...#7). Students living off campus currently can not access the user space on the University server.
How much does it cost to connect to the network?
Each student who resides in University Housing is assessed a per semester connectivity fee which is incorporated into the cost of room and board. This allows for all residents to use the network through a connection in their room, computer labs in the halls, and the West Campus Community Center. Students wishing to connect their personal computers to the network are required to have a 3COM 10/100 Ethernet Card (or similar) installed in their computers. STS installs these cards for a fee.
Why do I need to log in?
You must "log in" to experience the Benefits of Connectivity.
I am a Visual Communication major and therefore need a Mac operating system. How do I make my Mac compatible with the network?
You need a RJ45 Ethernet Connection on your machine and the ability to connect via TCP/IP.
Can my roommate and I each have a computer in our room and connect to the network?
Space is very limited in the residence halls for two separate computer systems, and outlets for plugging in equipment are also a consideration. However, two computers can connect to the network by use of a three or four port switch which is then plugged into the wall jack. Then the two computers can be plugged into the switch.
