Ferris Computer Equipment Resale Store
by Stacey Weaver
The repurposing of equipment throughout the university has been a tremendous success. In the past, when items no longer met campus standards, most of it was recycled. However, with the rising cost of recycling, alternatives were researched to help reduce these costs and to help offset the cost of Ferris computer support services. Recently, a resale program has been developed that should help to contribute positively to the environment and the community while providing opportunities for individuals, nonprofit organizations, libraries, and K-12 education to obtain low cost computer equipment.
With financial concerns nationwide, on campus, and on an individual basis, it is becoming more difficult to balance budgets. If you are looking to buy a computer for personal use, consider purchasing a used machine from the Ferris Computer Equipment Resale store. Items such as computers, monitors, keyboards, and laptop bags will be added to the on-line store as they become available. Please take a moment to check it out here and thank you for your support!
Receive 15% off purchases made at the Computer Equipment Resale store between 6/15/09 and 6/19/09 when you enter the promotion code 'newsletter' on the Payment Methods page. Item availability is limited.

Attaching to the Wireless Network at Ferris
by Mike Johnson
Attaching to the wireless network here on the FSU Big Rapids campus can be both liberating and time saving, but there are a few things that you must know before getting started. First, you must be aware of your current wireless status. The below picture shows the icon of your Wireless Network Connection. You can locate this in Windows XP by going to Start>Control Panel>Network Connections.
By right mouse clicking on this icon, the menu shown below will appear. It is helpful to look here for a couple different reasons.

- If you see "Disable" at the top of the menu, the network card is enabled.
- "View Available Wireless Networks" shows the available Ferris Wireless network connections.
Once the “View Available Wireless Networks” is selected, choose from the available networks within range. Keep in mind that the FSU wireless network is made up of two networks FSUNetI (the wireless indoor network) and FSUNet (the wireless outdoor network). Attach to the network which applies to your location. After selecting a network to connect to, click on the “Connect” button at the bottom. If the network button says "Disconnect" the computer is already connected to that network.
After opening a web browser, a redirection occurs to a service called Cisco Clean Access. This redirection validates software and authentication to protect the university network. At this page, enter your MyFSU username and password. Once authenticated, the computer is authorized to navigate the Internet and access other campus resources using the Ferris wireless network. If you are still having difficulties accessing the wireless network, please contact the TAC at 231-591-4822.

How to Copy and Paste Like a Pro and Quickly Switch Programs
by Randy Shanks
Frequent switching between programs can be made easier by using certain keyboard combinations. An example is copying data from Excel and inserting it into a Word document. Many people would use the mouse and menus to select and copy the data into the clipboard. After it is copied they would switch applications and using the same technique, paste it into the second application.
There is an easier/faster way to do this with the keyboard. Highlight the data and press the “CTRL” and the “C” keys at the same time. This copies the data to the clipboard. If the other application is already open, press and hold “ALT” key and press the “Tab” key as many times as needed to cycle through the open windows to where the data is to be pasted. Once you are in the application, navigate to where you want to place the data and press push “CTRL” and the “V” keys at the same time. That will paste the data copied from Excel.
A list of keyboard combinations:
CTRL + C = Copy data
CTRL + V = Paste data
CTRL + X = Cut data
ALT + Tab = Switch open programs

Classroom Renovations
by Jody Gardei
There are several classrooms being renovated this summer. The office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs started what is referred to as the “Classroom Renovation” project about five years ago in response to the president’s initiative to create a learning centered campus. Each summer, classrooms are reviewed and selected for this project. These classrooms are redesigned to improve technology, flexibility, comfort, and sound in support of a learner-centered environment. This summer, Science 102, Swan 114, VFS 421, VFS 422, & VFS 423 are in the process of being renovated.
Computer Technology Services has been heavily involved in the review of the design of the technology going into the classrooms. We spent time in April and May testing out new podium control panels. Several faculty members were able to try out the new control panel and the feedback was unanimously positive. The classrooms listed above will have the new control panel installed for fall semester. Make sure to visit one of the new rooms in the fall to try it out. Let us know what you think!
