About

The Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning, through its Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Initiative, provides opportunities for faculty to examine SoTL literature and produce scholarly works that contribute to a body of knowledge on teaching and learning. The SoTL Initiative also engages faculty in a larger, international SoTL effort.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Journal Club

Mary Taylor Huber and Pat Hutchings (2005) wrote in Surveying the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, "It (the scholarship of teaching and learning) means viewing the work of the classroom as a site for inquiry, asking and answering questions about students' learning in ways that can improve one's own classroom and also advance the larger profession of teaching."[1]

This is an invitation to you to participate in a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Journal Club to examine research literature that addresses issues in college teaching and learning.  We'll consider how the research questions are framed, the research methods used, and the research results and their relevance to our work in the classroom.

Logistics

The SoTL Journal Club will meet in IRC 104 for 7 sessions during the Spring 2009 semester.  Specific dates and times will be determined based on participants' schedules. Snacks or meals (if meetings occur during lunch or dinner time) will be provided.

If you wish to participate in the SoTL Journal Club, please contact Lauri Daniels by e-mail at danielsl@ferris.edu.  If you have questions, please contact Adnan Dakkuri (College of Pharmacy; dakkuria@ferris.edu) or Todd Stanislav (FCTL; stanist@ferris.edu), co-facilitators of the SoTL Journal Club.

Support for faculty

Faculty who participate fully in all sessions will be provided travel support to attend a SoTL conference during the 2009-2010 academic year (travel will be arranged with FCTL).  Representative SoTL conferences can be found at: http://www.ferris.edu/fctl/Scholarship_of_Teaching/Resources.htm (scroll down the page to "Examples of SoTL Conferences").
