Instructional Design
What is Instructional Design? What to Teach and How to Teach It As Guided by Research
Instructional Design is a systematic development of instruction. It is a process that begins with an analysis of learning needs and goals and ends with the development of a delivery system to meet those needs. The process includes development of instructional materials, activities, assessments, and evaluation of the effectiveness of the design and delivery. How Does It Work?
Instructional-design theory provides guidance on how to facilitate learning in various situations and under different conditions. Therefore, instructional designers must take into account both methods and situations. Instructional design theories provide instructional designers and teachers different tools for facilitating learning in different situations somewhat like the carpenter with their cadre of tools.
Instructional design focuses on the integration of three key things:
- Instructional Outcomes – defines what will be accomplished
e.g. goals, objectives, learning objectives, learning outcomes- Instructional Strategies – defines how we will accomplish it
e.g. matching the optimal activity to achieve the objective- Assessment – asks if we accomplished it
