Spring 2007 Annual Report
Dear Alumni, Friends, Supporters and Students of the Welding Engineering Technology Department at
Ferris State University:
2006-07 produced possibly the highest demand
for interns and graduates seeking employment in the history
of the Bachelor of Science program, and as of this writing
almost all of the seniors are placed with a month until
commencement. Although the Michigan economy is trailing the
rest of the country still over 30% of our graduates found
employment in the state. Construction and Agricultural
Equipment Manufacturing, Welding Equipment Manufacturing,
Automotive, and Worldwide Power Plant and Pipeline
Construction are currently the industries most actively
recruiting students. Significant department milestones,
accomplishments, and activities are highlighted below:
Enrollment was above targeted capacity with 128 majors in
the technical sequence. The distribution is 72/56 in the
A.A.S. Welding Technology and B.S. Welding Engineering
Technology programs respectively
Welding majors were awarded over $53,000 in
American Welding Society section, district and national
named Scholarships in 2006-2007
Welding students have now been awarded over
$725,000 in American Welding Society Scholarships since 1986
The 4th annual FSU State Secondary Welding
Competition was held spring 2006, with 67 students from 16
schools participating, 24 companies and individuals
contributed cash, supplies, equipment, and scholarships
valued at $22,000
30 B.S. Welding Engineering Technology and 25
A.A.S. Welding Technology degrees were awarded in 2006
Over 360 B.S. Welding Engineering Technology
degrees have now been awarded since the inaugural class of
1986
This year's
report is dedicated to the entire Bachelor of Science
Welding Engineering Technology Class of 2006. The commitment
of every student in this class to advancing the department
simply cannot be quantified! The students of this class were
leaders in every sense. The pursuit of their education with
academic integrity and honesty in part lead to the highest
aggregate class GPA on record. Organizing student meetings,
the student chapter golf outing, and adoption of a section
of the Muskegon Riverwalk reflects their selfless acts of
time and talent for the benefit of many. It truly was an
honor to be a part of their formal professional development!
Sincerely,
Kenneth A. Kuk C.Mfg.E., C.W.I.
