The Ornamental Horticulture Technology program - is a fully accredited college associates degree that blends science and art. This two-year Associate of Applied Science degree prepares students for a wide range of horticultural careers. Golf course superintendent, greenhouse grower, and public garden horticulturist are some of the many career options available. The Ornamental Horticulture degree program provides hands-on instruction in landscape design and horticulture. College students are prepared for a career in horticulture and landscape design using the same equipment and techniques as used by the leading professionals in the field. Students learn landscape installation, horticulture maintenance, and health diagnosis of landscape plants while also considering their aesthetic and functional importance. Skills in landscape design, greenhouse environments, propagation, and turfgrass management are also established in our fully accredited college horticulture degree program.
Training is conducted on our beautifully landscaped campus and Katke Golf Course. Horticulture instructional facilities also include a state-of-the-art computerized rooftop greenhouse. Additionally, internships provide our college horticulture students with the experience, training, and practical skills that future employers expect.
The ornamental horticulture technology degree program at Ferris State University offers a unique college experience for students who prefer small class sizes, experienced and dedicated faculty, and a tight campus community that knows its students by name. In addition to the numerous job positions available upon graduation, this associates degree in horticulture and landscape design offers many other options as well. College horticulture degree Students may build upon this associates degree and horticulture certificate program to earn a bachelor's degree. Small Business & Entrepreneurship plus Applied Biology are two of the most popular Associates Degree options at Ferris State.
Traditionally, college horticulture students begin their landscape design and horticulture maintenance coursework in the fall. However, to accommodate individual needs, our horticulture students may begin studies in any semester.
Many exciting and high paying career options await our Horticulture degree graduates; some of the employment opportunities that await include career options as a: golf course superintendent, greenhouse grower, and public garden horticulturist and our horticulture internships provide college students with the experience, training, and practical skills for horticulture future employers expect.
The college horticulture classes at Ferris State are taught in an array of progressive classroom environments. Many horticulture class sessions are held outdoors on our beautiful college campus to allow the study of plants in natural settings. The FSU Smith Greenhouse is a recently constructed glass panel roof top greenhouse laboratory. Features include automated environmental controls for humidity, sunlight, and temperature, mist bed propagation systems, horticulture display, landscape design and production areas. Additionally, interested horticulture degree students may apply for employment in the Ferris State greenhouse. The Horticulture Tree Nursery is a lab area where our college landscape design students learn hands-on techniques for tree care such as pruning, micro injection, planting, protection, and maintenance of landscape trees. Trees in the nursery are grown for use on the Katke Golf Course. Ferris State University's Katke Golf Course ranks among the finest University-owned golf courses in the United States. The course covers 6,674 yards of the gentle rolling hills that define the beautiful West Michigan landscape. Katke also offers one of the best practice facilities in all of the Midwest, including a three-hole practice golf course, a golf driving range with six target greens, and a chipping, pitching and putting green with practice bunker.
College Horticulture Students can build upon their associates degree to earn a Bachelors degree. The Ornamental Horticulture Technology Degree program allows students to advance their college education with a specialization in Horticulture while providing an emphasis on skills that relate directly to the student's career goals. The Ornamental Horticulture Technology - OHT Associate Degree will "ladder" into many popular Associates Degree programs at Ferris State. Please note that it is possible to begin Horticulture courses in any semester and still complete the horticulture and landscape design college degree program in two years.

After lunch, guests may take part in a walking tour of campus led by one of our exceptional student guides. The walking tour takes approximately 1 hour.
