Online Classes

Many students ask the question - "Can I take any of my classes on-line?" To answer this question let's make sure that we are all using the same definition of what on-line is. In the College of Business at Ferris State University we have defined three levels of on-line learning: fully online, blended, and web-enhanced.

Fully Online

A fully online course is one that is completely taught on-line. The student and instructor never meet face-to-face. All course activity and assignments occur electronically. This requires that the student has adequate Internet access using a computer with a web browser that is compatible with the FerrisConnect system (see below for full description of FerrisConnect). The following is a list of classes that are currently offered in the fully-online format.

  • ECOM 383 - Business-to-Consumer E-Commerce Marketing
  • ECOM 375 - Business-to-Business E-Commerce Marketing
  • ADVG 375 - Business-to-Business Advertising
  • MKTG 383 - Direct Marketing
  • MKTG 322 - Consumer Behavior
  • MKTG 321 - Principles of Marketing
  • ADVG 222 - Principles of Advertising

Blended

Blended courses have a mixed delivery of instruction which means that some portion of the content and assignment submission is done electronically, and some portion of the content and assignment submission is done in a traditional face-to-face setting. So the instructor and student do meet, but not for all class times. Below is a list of programs within the College of Business that offer classes in the blended format.

Web-Enhanced

Web-enhanced is traditional course with a web presence. It is a traditional course where the student attends class on a regular basis, but the course has an on-line or electronic component. This could include such things as content delivery, electronic submission of assignments, a message board for the course, the ability to e-mail other students in the same course, looking at an electronic grade book, taking on-line quizzes and tests, and providing copies of materials that were used in class.
Many courses within the College of Business are web-enhanced and the number is growing constantly.

FerrisConnect

Ferris State University uses a course management system called FerrisConnect to deliver the web portion of a course whether it the course is fully online, blended, or web-enhanced. To be able to use FerrisConnect a student must:

  • have access to a computer with adequate hardware resources
  • have access to a computer with a compatible browser (they can run the "check browser" utility to make sure their browser is compatible)
  • have access to a computer with adequate Internet access
  • be enrolled in a course that has a web component

When students log into FerrisConnect via a web browser they will see a list of all the courses they are currently enrolled in that have a web component. An individual instructor might utilize tools within their course that would require additional browser features and students should check with the instructor for any browser or other software requirements.
