About the Computer Information Systems Program

College of Business, Ferris State University

The Bachelor of Science degree, offered through the College of Business at Ferris, prepares students to be managers of computing systems by providing programming, systems analysis, network administration, and database management skills. Entry-level positions include such jobs as: systems analyst; systems integrator; systems architect; network administrator; applications programmer/analyst; software developer; computer support specialist; systems administrator; systems programmer; project leader; database administrator; and, business analyst. The CIS program has close relationships with industry through an industry advisory board and offers internships as a practical hands-on experience. The hands-on approach in the bachelor's degree gives graduates a real-world look at their field.

Standards-Based & Flexible Program

The CIS curriculum is designed to be flexible and uses five directed electives to accommodate student career needs, transfer students, and minors. It will also allow the program to adjust easier when IT skill sets needed by industry change over time. The curriculum core is aligned to a national standard (IS 2002) which was produced by the ACM, AITP, and AIS professional societies. This core of 33 hours was created from skills and attributes listed in thousands of job advertisements for IS positions.

CIS Business Foundations

The CIS curriculum provides students with a broad understanding of core business functions, competency in computer programming, knowledge of information technology infrastructure, and a sound foundation in systems analysis and design. Furthermore, this curriculum provides the necessary related business skills for immediate employment in information systems and for advancement to management positions.

IT Certifications for Academic Credit

IT certifications are recognized by employers and are regarded by up to 16% above base pay depending upon the type of certification. The CIS program accepts the following certifications for academic courses: A+; CNA or CNE; MCSA or MCSE; NET+; PMP; Sun Certified Programmer for Java Platform 1.2 & 1.4. Other certifications are being evaluated for possible inclusion in this list.
