The Card Wildlife Education Center Scholarship Fund

It took years of collaboration and decades of collecting and preserving exotic animals for The Card Wildlife Education Center of Ferris State University to become a reality. The dream will continue as Roger and Debra Card have established a scholarship fund to help staff the center with students. Recipients of the Card Scholarship will receive $2,500 a year for four years, beginning with their freshman year. Each year a new freshman majoring in biology, environmental studies or recreation leadership management will be selected to receive the scholarship. In return, these students will help to staff the Wildlife Center and care for the collection during their years at Ferris.

Roger Card is a 1963 graduate of Ferris State's College of Technology, and both he and his late wife have hunted big game worldwide. Together, the Cards have donated or loaned more than 130 animal mounts and pledged more than $100,000 for development and maintenance of the Center. This set of scholarships continues the Cards' commitment to Ferris and their involvement in educating students throughout the community and the state.

"I had most of these animals on display at my office," said Card. "A few people a year would walk through and see them, but Deb and I worked very hard to have them displayed where thousands of people can see them."

The Card Wildlife Center is part of the biology department in the College of Arts and Sciences, under the supervision of Dr. Joseph Lipar. In addition to meeting academic requirements (which include a high-school grade-point average of 3.25 or higher and a ACT score of 23 or higher), students must be comfortable talking to people.

Student will be giving tours, so they are expected to be able to communicate and answer a variety of questions.

Extracurricular activities such as involvement in clubs, sports and volunteer work will be highly regarded in making a final decision on scholarship candidates.

The scholarship fund will ensure the proper staffing for a facility that already draws around 6,000 visitors each year.

For more information about the scholarship, send an email message to Joseph Lipar.
