Sports Marketing Alumnus Scores a Career with the Indiana Pacers
Graduate of the 2011 Sports Marketing program, and former president of Ferris State’s chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA), Eric Cole continues to shine as he pursues his career with the Indiana Pacers.
Cole landed his career with the Pacers after attending a Detroit Pistons job fair during his senior year at Ferris. He was hired as an Inside Sales Accounting Executive and was promoted six months later to a Group Events Specialist.
Cole’s main duty as a Group Events Specialist is to bring different groups and organizations to a Pacer basketball game. Whether the group wants to be involved in a half time event, or just relax and enjoy the game, Cole creates a customized fan package based on their desires.
“There are a lot of things I love about working with the Pacers. I enjoy both the challenge and creative aspect of my job. I can create an experience for a group based on their interests,” Cole said.
Being involved and gaining experience was never an issue for Cole during his career at Ferris. He dedicated much of his time to his fraternity, Sigma Pi, as the vice president, brotherhood chairman and recruitment director. He also had a great deal of involvement with the Ferris Athletic Department, where he did three internships as a Marketing and Promotions Director and an Athletic Sponsorship Intern.
“Get as much experience as you can, and go out of your way to get it. Get involved with the athletic department and AMA. What ever your interests may be, get involved somewhere,” Cole said.
Under Cole’s presidency of Ferris AMA, the RSO earned the bronze award, ranking top 20 out of over 300 national chapters at the AMA International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans. That same year, he was crowned homecoming king.
In addition to achieving a Bachelors degree in Sports Marketing, Cole also earned a Certificate in Sales and a Certificate in Public Relations. He also was awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. Achievement Award and the College of Business Excellence Award. Cole’s involvement, experience and leadership he expressed at Ferris did not stay on campus, but carried with him as he entered the real world in Indianapolis.
