Public Relations Intern: Mari Ann Loucks
My homework is something I will actually be doing in a professional setting.
Public Relations student Mari Ann Loucks, will begin her senior year at Ferris State University in the fall. Mari Ann is currently interning at Make-A-Wish® Michigan as a communication intern, a position that allows her to express her creativity and love for writing.
“I chose to intern here because I know someone who had a wish granted with Make-A-Wish, and [I saw] how it positively impacted his entire family. I knew I wanted to work in a nonprofit organization, and I love the message of Make-A-Wish, so it was a perfect fit,” Mari Ann says.
Interning at Make-A-Wish® Michigan is preparing Mari Ann to accomplish her careers goals after graduation. This includes working in communications or brand enhancement at a nonprofit organization.
When asked how her major is preparing her to reach her career goals, Mari Ann explains, “the Public Relations program at Ferris is preparing me for this because my classroom assignments are actual assignments that I will receive in the ‘real world.’ My homework is something I will actually be doing in a professional setting, such as creating media kits and writing press releases.”
Mari Ann is very involved on campus; she is the Vice President of Chapter Development for her student organization, the Public Relations Student Society of America, and she is the lead news reporter for the on-campus newspaper, the Torch.
As a communications intern Mari Ann plans events, creates written content, works directly with Wish Families and Wish Kids, and helps develop the Wish-A-Mile® Bicycle Tour fundraising event.
“When I came to Make-A-Wish, they said that no two days would be alike, and that is so true… There is something new to do at Make-A-Wish every day.”
