PTM Students Join Fed Cup Match as Official Stringers
Ferris State University’s Professional Tennis Management (PTM) program recently sent two students, Alex Meyers and Erik Seifert, to the U.S. vs. Italy Fed Cup match to serve as official stringers for the Italian Fed Cup team.
Fed Cup is the world’s oldest annual international women’s competition with 97 countries participating. The Fed Cup match took place in Cleveland, Ohio at the Public Auditorium on February 8-9, 2014 but Meyers and Seifert were in town all week as both teams prepared for the weekend competition.
Meyers and Seifert are both certified master racquet technicians through the United States Racquet Stringers Association and are the only two students in the program currently holding this distinction. The PTM program was contacted by industry veteran Greg Aten, managing director of the Chagrin Valley Athletic Club, who was affiliated with the event and was also instrumental in providing the opportunity and organizing the logistics of both student’s weeklong stay.
Reflecting upon the experience and their week in Cleveland, both students were thankful for the opportunity and learned some valuable insight into stringing for some of the best players in the world. Meyers and Seifert both commented on the relaxed nature of the Italian team when it came to getting racquets re-strung and returned back. On average, string jobs were returned to players within a half hour which far exceeded the Italian team’s expectations.
It was also a valuable experience for both students, in learning the process of how certified stringers secure an opportunity to string at professional level events, such as Fed Cup. Both Meyers and Seifert look forward to potentially having opportunities in the future to participate and contribute to these types of events.
Outside of their stringing responsibilities for the week, there was plenty of opportunity to watch both teams practice and compete prior to the event. Meyers and Seifert will be certified teaching professionals upon graduation from Ferris. Learning from and noting the differences in the training and practice routines for both of the teams in preparation for the match provided valuable insights to be applied to their future teaching careers. Italy has won the Fed Cup title three times since 2009 and came away with a 3-1 victory over the U.S. during the course of the weekend.
Serving as an official stringer for the Italian Fed Cup team is just another great example of the distinctive types of opportunities presented to students going through the PTM program at Ferris State University.
