Professional activities and areas of interest
Dr. Maureen S. Heaphy is a lifelong learner having earned four college degrees over a twenty-five year period. Her dissertation title is “Holistic, Ecological, and Systemic Measures of Patient Focused Care”. Her doctorate was awarded by Wayne State University in 1998. Techniques used varied from inductive inquiry using ethnographic field observation to multivariate quantitative analysis. Maureen began her career at General Motors and worked for five divisions over a 13 year period. Her last position with GM was Director of Statistical Methods. She was a Founding Member of the Deming Study group which met with Dr. Deming once a month for multiple years. After leaving GM she was a consultant providing guidance to organizations to assist them in improving their quality and competitive position through the use of the Baldrige Performance Excellence criteria. In addition to her consulting experience she was a Baldrige Examiner, co-authored a book on the subject, and was a Founding Member of Michigan Quality Council (Baldrige at the state level).
Maureen taught undergraduate and graduate students as an adjunct for nearly twenty years. She is an Evaluator for an accrediting body and has a strong interest in defining processes and using assessment data for continual improvement. Her teaching career went through numerous phases from being nervous (9th grade future teacher club teaching a class of peers), seeing success, involving participants, being Socratic, asking why, to being practical and hands on. She knows the importance of maintaining the joy of learning.
