Computer Degrees Offered at Ferris State University
Ferris offers several degrees related to the computer, or Information Technology (IT) industry. The following is a comparison of these degrees.
Computer Information Systems (CIS): The BS (Bachelor of Science) degree in CIS, offered by the College of Business, prepares students to be immediately employable in the computer systems field. The CIS program provides students with a broad understanding of core business functions, competency in database applications and Java programming, knowledge of information technology infrastructure, competency in Web applications, and a solid foundation in systems analysis and design. Entry-level positions include such jobs as: systems analyst; systems integrator; systems architect; network administrator; applications programmer/analyst; software developer; computer support specialist; systems administrator; systems programmer; project leader; database administrator; and, business analyst. The CIS program has close relationships with industry through an advisory board. An internship is required for real-world experience, and to give students an advantage in the job market. The hands-on approach in the bachelor's degree gives graduates a real-world look at their field.
Computer Information Technology (CIT): The BS degree in CIT, offered by the College of Business, prepares students to be immediately employable in the computer support field. The CIT program prepares students for several industry certifications including: CompTIA's: A+, Network+, Linux+, Security+, and Microsoft’s Microsoft Certified Information Technology Professional (MCITP):Server Administrator). Potential employers stated that technical support personnel grounded in core business functions are much more marketable than those without such preparation. The overall objective of the Computer Information Technology - Systems Administration & Security program is to prepare graduates for employment in business, industry, or government sectors at career-entry level positions in the technology support field such as computer support specialist, help-desk technician, network and computer systems administrator, and computer security specialist.
Computer Networks and Systems (CNS): The BS degree in CNS, offered by the College of Engineering Technology, emphasizes networking ( Cisco Networking Academy member ), smart devices (embedded microprocessor devices), computer control, systems integration, real-time software and operating systems, digital/microprocessor theory and design, real-time software and operating systems, project management, and provides a solid foundation in electronics. CNS emphasizes skills and applied theory most valued by potential employers. Course work integrates laboratory exercises to further strengthen newly learned concepts and promote hands-on skills. Additionally, a summer internship provides real work experience. CNS emphasizes: network implementation and administration; network communication theory, test, design, and applications; real-time control networks; operating systems; computer control systems design; microprocessor, digital and electronic theory and application; micro-controller applications, designs, programming and integration; software development and applications; project management.
Applied Mathematics with Computer Science Concentration: The BS degree in Applied Mathematics with a concentration in Computer Science (23-24 credit hours of CS courses and 25 credits in mathematics courses) is offered by the College of Arts and Sciences. The need for people with a computer science background is very high and continues to grow. Virtually every organization relies heavily on computers. Computer scientists write programs, develop algorithms and design software. The field of computational mathematics combines knowledge of computer science with that of mathematics and is in great demand throughout the world.
Information Security and Intelligence (ISI): The BS degree in ISI prepares you for a variety of career possibilities in fields that allow you to see your contributions in action. Computer forensics, fraud investigation, information security, intelligence, and terrorism and crime analysis are a few of the possibilities. Opportunities exist in the government, security, intelligence, health care, insurance, finance, education and several other fields. The FSU Center of Excellence, one of 8 in the country to map to all six Committee on National Security System standards, is housed within the College of Business in the Instructional Resource Center. The mission of the Center is to promote awareness, education, research, and training in Information Assurance through collaboration. Specialties at Ferris include information security, digital forensics, risk & visual analysis, and infrastructure security.
Digital Animation and Game Design (DAGD): The BAS (Bachelor of Applied Science) degree in DAGD, offered by the College of Professional & Technological Studies only in Grand Rapids, is focused on educating students in the latest tools and technology used to create digital and interactive content to offer a multitude of futures for its graduates, from programming to simulation to game design. The required general education classes are targeted to future employees in digital technology as well as providing general knowledge and skills that will be useful in many aspects of life. The foundation classes provide depth of knowledge applicable to any digital technology field with classes in design, business, 3D animation, and programming. The recommended electives allow students to further expand their knowledge in a particular area such as programming, music technology, and CAD. Before graduating, all students will also complete an internship to give them the real-world experience and people connections necessary to succeed in their chosen profession.
