Professional activities and areas of interest
Dr. Woolen’s research interests include computer ethics, employee motivation, the management of technology, and societal impacts of technology. His 34 years of experience in the IT industry include leadership positions (CIO, Associate VP, Executive Director, Director, Associate Director, and Supervisor) and applications development positions (systems analyst, programmer, etc.). He has taught traditional classroom courses in programming languages (COBOL, BASIC), introduction to IT for non-CIS majors, and computer concepts. Dr. Woolen has also taught on-line courses in project management. As a member of the Certification Council for the Institute for Certification of Computer Professionals (ICCP), Dr. Woolen helps design and update national certification exams for computer professionals. The ICCP is acknowledged throughout the information and communications technology sectors as the most authoritative source of professional certification. Dr. Woolen was selected by the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to be trained and serve as a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award examiner in 2009 & 2010. He is currently the accreditation co-champion and student learning assessment facilitator for the college of Business. Dr. Woolen was awarded senior member status by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in 2010. As one of ACM’s prestigious Advanced Member Grades, ACM Senior Member status recognizes the top 25% of ACM Professional Members for their demonstrated excellence in the computing field. ACM, with its 97,000 members from more than 100 countries is the world’s largest education and scientific computing society. Dr. Woolen is active in the Big Rapids community serving as president of the Board of Directors for Crossroads Charter Academy during the past several years. He is a recent past president of the Rotary Club of Big Rapids, and serves as a board member for Recycle of Mecosta.
