Students Inspired by Graphic Design Leaders at Conference
February 25, 2014
Senior Graphic Design students travelled to the University of Illinois to attend the annual SEEK Design Conference, now in its twelfth year. At the one-day event, students participated in hands-on workshops, spoke with Ferris alumni, and gained exposure to the industry.
Speakers included top designers Stefan Sagmeister and Aaron Draplin. A few local design firms, like Knoed Creative, Firebelly Design, and Thirst, also joined the conference. These firms discussed the success and struggles that come with working in the industry and their recommendations for design students.
“When you’re stuck in a creative block, listening to design professionals get so excited and passionate about design resonates those same emotions with the audience,” senior graphic design student Emily Noffsinger said. “It really reinforces how important design is within our everyday lives when you hear about how these few designers have changed the way people communicate and interact.”
The newest feature of the SEEK Conference was organizaed “hang-outs,” which became workshops where students could interact with and learn from the attending professionals. Ferris alumnae Victoria Pater led a “hang-out” on designing for mobile.
“Victoria Pater actually graduated from Ferris State University’s Graphic Design Program, and to know that she’s now a successful mobile designer and speaking at the SEEK Conference is hugely inspiring,” senior student Bethany Sonefeld said. “The workshops gave students a chance to speak one-on-one with design professionals, while also collaborating with other design students to solve a problem.”
Attendees were encouraged to post pictures, videos, and conference content on social media, tagged with “#SEEKCON2013.” A live-stream of the content projected throughout the conference allowed for even more interaction between attendees and design professionals.
