Professional activities and areas of interest
Jim Shimko teaches accounting in the College of Business at Ferris State University. After working ten years with the IRS as a Revenue Agent and an Exempt Organizations Specialist, Jim has taught college level courses in accounting and taxation. His areas of research are accounting for sustainability and active learning for student engagement.
One of Jim’s volunteer activities is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program sponsored by the IRS. VITA provides free tax assistance to low-income or elderly members in the community. He encourages students to volunteer for VITA as a valuable service learning opportunity.
