Why Major in Allied Health Education?

The allied health degree program prepares college students to teach health education in community colleges, vocational and technical schools and skill centers, medical institutions and institutions of higher education. Health education degree course work includes general and professional teacher education classes and a directed health education teaching experience. Health education college students are admitted into the allied health education degree program after completion of an accredited associates degree, certificate program or licensure in an approved allied health technical or professional specialty. The associates degree in allied health can be completed at Ferris State or another accredited college, university, or educational institution.

Ferris State has an excellent reputation for preparing college health education students for many health education careers. Allied Health Degree graduates are well trained in allied health education subject matter and skills of their respective health degree disciplines and possess knowledge of the most effective health education teaching methods. Allied Health Degree students are also skilled in human relations, testing and evaluation procedures, laboratory organization and management.

Admission Requirements

High school students and college students transferring into the allied health education degree program with 29 credit hours or less must possess a high school grade point average of 2.25 (on a 4.0 scale) or an ACT composite score of 15. College students wishing to transfer into the Allied Health Degree Program with 30 credit hours or more must possess a 2.0 cumulative GPA. College students transferring into the Allied Health Education program with completed majors or minors must have the appropriate GPA as established by each department. Consult Allied Health Degree description for all other college health education admission requirements.

Admission to the allied health degree program normally requires the completion of an accredited allied health associates degree in an approved allied health specialty. Individuals who are certified, licensed, or registered to practice in an approved allied health area will be granted up to 40 semester hours of credit toward the allied health degree and allied health major requirements. Licensure, certification, or registry, where applicable, is a requirement for graduation with the bachelor of science degree in allied health education.

The allied health education program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in allied health through the School of Education, College of Education & Human Services. Graduates of the allied health degree program must complete all of Ferris State's general education, allied health program, and health education degree requirements. Professional health education program requirements include a semester of directed student health education teaching. After lunch, guests may take part in a walking tour of campus led by one of our exceptional student guides. The walking tour takes approximately 1 hour.
