About the Institute:  The Advanced Placement Institute for Biology is an intensive six day Laboratory program.  It is designed to provide AP biology teachers with an introduction to the  College Board's AP program as well as provide each teacher with the basic tools needed to create a successful AP laboratory program within his/her own classroom. Participants will receive lab manuals, College Board manuals, textbooks, and resource catalogs along with intensive hands-on instruction which includes performing all 12 recommended AP labs.  Participants will also be given valuable cost-effective information regarding the ordering of materials and equipment used with these labs.

The schedule for each day consists of pre-lab discussions, followed by the lab itself including a special emphasis on developing the analytical and writing skills students need to be successful with free response questions based on the content of each lab.  Students should also expect evening lab sessions to be part of each day's schedule.    Upon completion of the Institute, teachers will have the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to successfully conduct and assess the content of these AP labs.

Instructors:  John Gehring has twenty years of experience teaching AP Biology and AP Biology Summer Institutes.  He has been both a Reader and Table Leader at the AP Biology Reading for the past nineteen years and in 1999 was honored with the Siemans Award for Advanced Placement given by the Siemans Foundation.  Assisting John is Robert Hamilton.  Rob has fourteen years of experience teaching AP Biology, ten years as an AP Biology Summer Institute instructor and has been a Reader of the AP Biology exam for the past 6 years.

If you are staying on campus, plan to arrive at Ward Hall on the university campus by 5:30 p.m., Sunday, June 20, to check into your residence hall room.  Please note that the hall is not air conditioned so you may want to bring a fan.  The Biology institute will begin on Sunday evening (June 20) at 6:30 pm.  Participants should report to the Ferris State University, Science Building, second floor, room 212.  The institute will conclude on Saturday (June 26) at noon.  A specific agenda will be provided to you at that time for the entire week.  Beginning Monday, lab sessions will run all day (8:30 an -5 p.m.) and evening (7-9 p.m.).  All participants will be provided with lab manuals, AP College Board manuals, and textbooks.
