Softball Team Is Again Among Top
Academic Squads
In
2002 for the second consecutive year, the Ferris State softball
team placed among the top 10 National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s
NCAA Division II All-Academic Teams. The Bulldogs finished fourth
overall, compiling a 3.474 cumulative grade point average.
The selection
of the NFCA All-Academic teams was based on cumulative grade point
averages submitted by member head coaches for the 2001-02 academic
year.
Ferris
State joined the University of Findlay (Ohio) as the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference representatives to place among
the top 10.
“This
recognition speaks well to our athletics department’s philosophy
of academics first and winning second,” said head coach
Keri Becker. “We take great pride in trying to beat the
rest of the country not only on the field, but most importantly
in the classroom.”
Individually,
nine team members were honored as 2002 NFCA Scholar-Athletes,
based upon registering a 3.5 grade point average for the academic
year. The group includes senior pitcher Jennifer Colvin, freshman
outfielder Sadie Deurloo, freshman second baseman-outfielder Navreet
Gill, sophomore outfielder Jessica Laidlaw, sophomore shortstop
Nicki Merchant, sophomore third baseman Dana Peuler, freshman
second baseman Carrie Shine, freshman catcher Melissa Worsley
and freshman outfielder Jessie Wright.
