Credit-By-Examination Program

Ferris State University recognizes that college-level learning occurs in places other than the traditional college classroom. Except for courses specifically excluded, all courses at Ferris State are open to students who wish to demonstrate their competency through the Credit-by-Examination Program (CBE).

This program consists of three elements: the Advanced Placement Program (AP®) and  the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP®).

If a student is currently enrolled or has been previously enrolled in a course or its equivalent at an accredited college or university (including Ferris), the student may not take AP or CLEP for that course regardless of whether they passed, failed or withdrew from the course. This is especially important when it comes to the foreign languages CLEP tests as they cover material from 101 through 202 and there is no way to separate out the questions for each level. If a student has taken a college level language class, they are NOT eligible to take the CLEP test for that language. In addition, please note that the Social Sciences-History CLEP exam covers a wide range of subjects, so it is important to check the list of covered classes (available on CLEP's website and in the Official CLEP Study Guide) before registering and paying for that exam to make sure eligibility is established. Feel free to contact the Testing Office if there is any confusion. Once CBE (Credit by Exam through AP or CLEP) credit for a given course has been awarded, a student may not subsequently enroll in that course and receive a grade.

Questions regarding the scheduling of a CLEP exam should be directed to [email protected] or by calling (231) 591-3628.
