Analyzing and Interpreting Literature
The Analyzing and Interpreting Literature examination is presented in two sections. Section I contains 80 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 90 minutes. Section II requires the examinee to write two short essays.
Students should consider attempting this exam if they have a broad knowledge of literature through reading widely and if they are familiar with basic literary terminology. This examination focuses on
- poetry
- prose (fiction and nonfiction)
- drama
- British literature
- American literature
- works in translation
- classical and pre-renaissance
- renaissance and 17th century
- 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.
Computer-based Scoring: CLEP computer-based (CBT) exams are scored without a penalty for incorrect guessing. The raw score--the number of correct responses--is translated into a scaled score. The scaled scores for CLEP CBT are reported in a range from 20 to 80. Ferris State University grants credit for a score of 50 or higher.
At Ferris, candidates taking the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature exam must score a 50 or higher on the multiple-choice section in order to continue with the essay section.
