What is Articulation?

Articulation is a term used to describe the various methods by which a student can:
  • Receive credit for competencies mastered outside the classroom
  • Begin college in classes higher than entry level
  • Transfer community college credits to replace the general education requirements of a four-year university
  • Transfer lower level program course work programmatically to the four year university rather than transferring as elective credit

Articulation Defined

Articulation is the cooperative processes between two or more educational institutions to accommodate the academic goals of students. Articulation agreements allow students to build an additive degree program by taking courses either at different institutions or at the different campuses of one institution. Some interstate institutions have drafted articulation agreements to facilitate in the transfer of distance learning credits.

Articulation Agreement

A formal, written document agreed upon and signed by two or more institutions is called an Articulation Agreement.

Articulation Guide

A formal, articulated transfer plan that becomes a part of the formal, written Articulation Agreement of which both are agreed upon and signed by the two institutions is called an Articulation Guide. An Articulation Guide differs from a "transfer guide" in that a transfer guide is not formally articulated, it changes over time without notice, and it is the student's responsibility to verify the information on a transfer guide.
