Congratulations to the Festival of the Arts on its fifth year. This wonderful cultural celebration has transformed the month of February in Big Rapids. At a time when we see many communities and institutions pulling back their support for painting, music, literature, dance and other creative endeavors, Big Rapids and Ferris State University stand out in our dedication to the arts.
This month-long series of extraordinarily diverse offerings is remarkable for the artistic expressions it brings to our community, as well as the high level of talent it demonstrates on the parts of those who live, study and teach here. Even more remarkable is that a great many of the concerts, readings, plays and gallery openings are offered without charge. There is only one thing the Festival of the Arts lacks –- you. Please plan to attend the events that reflect your interests and perhaps try something completely different and new. I know that I find something unexpected and wonderful each year.
The Festival for the Arts highlights the long and close relationship between Big Rapids and Ferris State University. Woodbridge Ferris first began his school in rented rooms in downtown Big Rapids; when his classes grew enough that he decided to build a campus, he didn't go far. More than ever, it is impossible to image Ferris State University without Big Rapids –- or Big Rapids without Ferris –- as this Festival makes clear.
I want to thank Festival co-chairs Ed Mallett and Carrie Weis, past chair Bruce Dilg, and board members Richard Scott Cohen, Jerena Keys, Steve Sobers and Trinidy Williams for their tireless work in attending to the many details required to put on not just one event, but dozens. Pioneer Group chairman Jack Batdorff continues his passionate promotion of the the arts in Big Rapids through his work with the Festival, among other activities. Scores of volunteers work behind the scenes to bring these artists and performers to our town and campus. So many people make this celebration such a great success, so please join me in extending thanks to everyone who helps make the Festival of the Arts possible.
This year's schedule should warm up the coldest months of the year. I look forward to seeing you at the 2012 Festival of the Arts – it indeed does make the season warmer and brighter.
