Student Staff Position Descriptions:
Apartment Manager (AM)
The Apartment Manager (AM) works in the University Apartment Communities as live-in, paraprofessional staff members of the Office of Housing and Residence Life. He/she is responsible for the safety and security of the apartment communities as well as administrative tasks for multiple aspects of each community. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the oversight of his/her assigned area, providing duty coverage when classes are in session as well as during traditional campus breaks, and disseminating information as needed. He/she is responsible for checking all residents in and out of the apartments, the assessment of charges for damages, and the weekly monitoring of empty apartments. The AM will also serve in an on-duty rotation. The AM has the opportunity to work at the front desk at the West Campus Community Center and has the opportunity to work up to 20 hours per week at another on-campus job. The Office of Housing and Residence Life looks for candidates who will role model and promote the University’s mission and vision. This is a 10 month position, running from August to May, with an option of applying to work from May to August. Applicants may not be enrolled in internships, clinical or practicum experiences, participate in student teaching, be enrolled in the police academy, or have any academic commitments which take them off campus for significant amounts of time while employed as an AM.
Desk Services Manager (DSM)
The Desk Services Manager (DSM)is a live-in, paraprofessional staff member of the Office of Housing and Residence Life. He/she is responsible for serving as a resource for all residents and guests of the hall and University, including faculty, staff, and other visitors. The DSM plays a key role in the efficient delivery of desk-related services to these individuals, including distributing and forwarding mail, giving out supplies, and providing a sense of safety and security within the residence hall. He/she strives to develop and provide a service-oriented atmosphere where residents feel comfortable in seeking all types of assistance. The DSM is a position of peer management, assuming specific responsibility for the front desk in a designated residence hall. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, creating and maintaining a 24-hour/7-day desk schedule, managing payroll for desk operations, implementing systems to increase the safety and security of the residence hall, and the selection, training, and evaluation of desk staff members in conjunction with the Hall Director. The Office of Housing and Residence Life looks for candidates who will role model and promote the University’s mission and vision. Prior desk experience is preferred. This is a 10 month position, running from August to May, with an option of applying to work from May to August. Applicants may not be enrolled in internships, clinical or practicum experiences, participate in student teaching, be enrolled in the police academy, or have any academic commitments which take them off campus for significant amounts of time while employed as a DSM.
Resident Advisor (RA)
The Resident Advisor (RA)is a live-in, paraprofessional staff member of the Office of Housing and Residence Life. He/she is responsible for working closely with staff and students in creating and maintaining an atmosphere that promotes academic success, personal development, and an understanding of diversity through responsible community living in University residence halls. The RA will assume specific responsibility for a designated house within an assigned residence hall. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, personal and social development of residence hall students through educational and social programming, assistance in the administrative operations of the residence hall to be carried out under the supervision of the Hall Director, and participation in a building-wide duty rotation. The RA is a role model and a catalyst for positive social interaction within the residence hall community. The Office of Housing and Residence Life looks for candidates who will role model and promote the University’s mission and vision. This is a 10 month position, running from August to May, with an option of applying to work from May to August. Applicants may not be enrolled in internships, clinical or practicum experiences, participate in student teaching, be enrolled in the police academy, or have any academic commitments which take them off campus for significant amounts of time while employed as an RA.
Suite Advisor (SA)
The Suite Advisor (SA) is a live-in, paraprofessional staff member of the Office of Housing and Residence Life. He/she is responsible for the safety and security of the suite community as well as administrative tasks for multiple aspects of the community. The SA will assume responsibility for a specific building within the East Campus Suites (ECS) complex. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing duty coverage for the ECS both when classes are in session as well as during traditional campus breaks, assistance in the administrative operations of the residence hall to be carried out under the supervision of the Hall Director, and creating an inclusive community through intentional programming focusing on professional and social development. The SA is expected to work well in an autonomous environment and be self-motivated to hold him/herself and his/her peers accountable. Additionally, he/she has the opportunity to work up to 20 hours per week at another on-campus job. Desk Services Assistants (DSA)
The Desk Services Assistant (DSA) is a live-in, part-time student staff member of the Office of Housing and Residence Life. He/she works at the front desk of the building in which he/she lives. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, ensuring safety and security of the residence hall community, providing excellent customer service for residents, faculty, staff, and guests of the University and the residence hall, and assisting with mail, packages, supplies, and questions which residents have. The DSA must be a resident of building in which he/she works. Additionally, this position may require working late night, overnight, early morning, and weekend hours. The Office of Housing and Residence Life looks for candidates who will role model and promote the University’s mission and vision. This is a 10 month position, running from August to May.

Summer Camp Assistant (SCA)
The Summer Camp Assistant (SCA) is a live-in, paraprofessional staff member of the Office of Housing and Residence Life. He/she works in the residence halls to assist with camps over the summer. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, checking camps both in and out of the halls, participating in a duty rotation, ensuring the safety of the building(s), and the possibility of desk hours. Over the summer, the SCA must understand the need for flexibility and the constant change that comes with summer school and summer camps and conferences. The Office of Housing and Residence Life looks for candidates who will role model and promote the University’s mission and vision. Prior paraprofessional experience with the Office of Housing and Residence Life at Ferris State University is required and applicants must be enrolled as a full time student for the following fall semester at Ferris State University. This position is a 3-month position, running from May to August. Applicants may not be enrolled in internships, clinical or practicum experiences, participate in student teaching, be enrolled in the police academy, or have any academic commitments which take them off campus for significant amounts of time while employed as an SCA.
Summer Excel Resident Advisor (SERA)
The Summer Excel Resident Advisor (SERA)a live-in paraprofessional staff member of the Office of Housing and Residence Life, who also reports to the Office of Retention and Student Success. He/she is responsible for working closely with staff and students in creating and maintaining an atmosphere that helps new students who are transitioning to college and at this point do not yet meet academic standards for the Univeristy. SERAs help new students to promote academic success, time management as a college student, personal development, and an understanding of diversity through responsible community living in University residence halls. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, personal and social development of residence hall students through educational and social programming, assistance in the administrative operations of the residence hall to be carried out under the supervision of the Hall Director, and participation in a building-wide duty rotation. There will also be weekends which SERAs are required to be on campus to assist with trips and activities outside of duty coverage. Over the summer, the SERA must understand the need for flexibility and the constant change that comes with summer school and summer camps and conferences. The SERA is a role model and one of the first representatives of Ferris State University and a catalyst for positive social interaction for new students who are beginning their college experience. Prior Resident Advisor or Suite Advisor experience at Ferris State University is required and applicants must be enrolled as a full time student for the following fall semester at Ferris State University. This position is a 3-month position, running from May to August, but the actual program with students will run from mid-June to August. Applicants may not be enrolled in internships, clinical or practicum experiences, participate in student teaching, be enrolled in the police academy, or have any academic commitments which take them off campus for significant amounts of time while employed as an SERA.
Housing and Residence Life Summer Intern
The Housing and Residence Life Summer Intern is a live-on, paraprofessional staff member of the Office of Housing and Residence Life. He/she is responsible for working closely with staff to promote and execute the purpose of the Office of Housing and Residence Life. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, summer camps audit assistance, creating and maintaining programming efforts, and miscellaneous office work. This position will work approximately 30 hours each week and can be tailored for course credit. Over the summer, the intern must understand the need for flexibility and the constant change that comes with summer school and summer camps and conferences. The Office of Housing and Residence Life looks for candidates who will role model and promote the University’s mission and vision. Prior paraprofessional experience at Ferris State University is required and applicants must be enrolled as a full time student for the following fall semester at Ferris State University. This position is a 3-month position, running from May to August.
