STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

wheel chair basketballThe Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a person with a disability as someone with a mental, physical, or emotional challenge that significantly impacts one or more of the major daily tasks, such as walking, seeing, speaking, hearing, reading, writing, and/or learning. Individuals with disabilities can also have many strengths including resilience, determination, and high motivation. Students with disabilities may face unique challenges adjusting to college life such as adapting to new physical spaces, balancing being independent while receiving assistance, and deciding in which situations to share personal information regarding challenges that might be less visible to others. For some students these experiences and new adjustments may cause mental health or emotional problems. In these specific situations students may find it helpful to talk with a counselor at the Personal Counseling Center.
