Teacher Certification and Endorsements

Ferris is authorized by the State of Michigan to recommend individuals for below certificates and endorsements in Ferris approved subject areas.

Certifications and Endorsements Available Program Name on the Application

Secondary Provisional Certificate
A post-baccalaurate program for first time teachers.
The Secondary Provisional Certificate is the initial certificate issued upon completion of an approved program. The holder of this certificate is eligible to teach grades 6-12 in their content area major and minor provided the appropriate MTTC tests have been passed. If you are completing a Secondary Teacher Education bachelor’s degree, or if you currently hold a bachelor’s degree in a non-teaching field you will begin with this level of certification.

This is program is not eligible for financial aid.

Elementary Provisional Certificate
A post-baccalaurate program for first time teachers.
The Elementary Provisional Certificate is the initial certificate issued upon completion of an approved program. The holder of this certificate is eligible to teach grades K-5 in their content areas after passing the required MTTC test for Elementary teachers. Candidates for an elementary-level teaching certificate who wish to teach grades 6-8 in specific content areas must also pass the appropriate MTTC tests in order to qualify for the endorsements. Students wanting the ZS endorsement must also complete the Early Childhood minor and pass the appropriate MTTC test.

Additional Endorsements
You must have been issued a valid teaching certificate on which to add a new endorsement. The additional endorsement may be completed in any major or minor content area which FSU has been approved to offer. The appropriate MTTC content area test must be passed for the endorsement to be added to the valid certificate.

This option may be delivered at the undergraduate level (no financial aid) or at the graduate level with the possibility of financial aid.

Elementary Endorsement on a Secondary Certificate
This program is designed for persons who hold a Secondary Certificate (Provisional or Professional) and plan add the Elementary endorsement. Teachers seeking this endorsement must complete the Planned Program minor in addition to the Elementary Education courses as described on their individual program check lists. Candidates for the Elementary endorsement must pass the Elementary Education MTTC test.

This program is not eligible for financial aid.

Secondary Endorsement on an Elementary Certificate
A post baccalaureate program that is not eligible for financial aid.
This program is designed for persons who hold an Elementary Certificate (Provisional or Professional) and plan to add a Secondary endorsement. Teachers who seek this endorsement must complete the requirements for a specific secondary content major and pass the appropriate content MTTC test, as well as completing the required Secondary Education courses as indicated on their individual program check lists.

This program is not eligible for financial aid.

  • Teacher Certification - Additional Endorsement (Post Baccalaureate)

Certificate Renewal
This certificate is the next level of certificate following the Provisional Certificate. Contact the FSU Teacher Certification Officer for information on the updated rule changes on renewing certificates: Kelly Thompson, (231) 591-5375 or thom30@ferris.edu.

If the requirements for this advanced certificate are completed at the undergraduate/post baccalaureate level, there may be no financial aid available. If the requirements are completed in a graduate degree program, financial could be available.

  • Teacher Certification - Planned Program/Renewal

Interim Occupational Certificate
A post-baccalaurate program for first time teachers.
The interim occupational certificate is the initial vocational certificate (not to be confused with “annual occupational authorization”). With this certificate you are eligible to teach grades 9–12 in the occupational major, in a reimbursed vocational program.

This program is not eligible for financial aid.

  • Teacher Certification - Technical/Vocational Education (Post Baccalaureate)

Occupational Education Certificate
This certificate is the next level of certificate following the Interim Occupational Certificate. Contact the FSU Teacher Certification Officer for information on the updated rule changes on renewing certificates: Kelly Thompson, (231) 591-5375 or thom30@ferris.edu.

If the requirements for this advanced certificate are completed at the undergraduate/post baccalaureate level, there may be no financial aid available. If the requirements are completed in a graduate degree program, financial could be available.

  • Technical Education ProMoTEd
  • Teacher Certification - Planned Program/Renewal

Special Education Endorsement (Graduate Level)
The Special Education Endorsement program gives you, as a professional educator, the advanced professional development necessary to open several career options as well as providing a foundation to improve your instructional practice. You are eligible for admission to the program if you hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and are a currently certified teacher in the elementary or secondary setting. You may also elect to complete your Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction by completing two additional courses.
