Growth in the health care industry has led to a rapid expansion in the need for accurate and readily available medical information. Health Information Technicians (also known as Medical Record Technicians) organize and manage health information data. They ensure its quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security in both paper and electronic systems.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment for health information technicians will grow 22 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than average for all occupations. The demand for health services is expected to increase as the population ages. An aging population will need more medical tests, treatments, and procedures. This will mean more claims for reimbursement from insurance companies. Additional records, coupled with widespread use of electronic health records (EHRs) by all types of healthcare providers, could lead to an increased need for technicians to organize and manage the associated information in all areas of the healthcare including hospitals, clinics, physician offices, managed care organizations, insurance companies and government agencies among others.

Ferris State University’s Health Information Technology associate degree gives you the technical knowledge and skills necessary to maintain components of medical record/health information systems consistent with the medical, administrative, ethical, legal, accrediting and regulatory requirements of the health-care delivery system.

Graduates of this program are eligible for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential by sitting for the national certification examination administered by the American Health Information Management Association. With experience, the RHIT credential holds solid potential for advancement to management positions, especially when combined with a bachelor's degree.
