James Earl Ray assassinated Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. Ray shot Dr. King with a high caliber hunting rifle from a derelict building across the street from the Lorraine Motel. Ray confessed to the murder, was convicted, sentenced, later recanted his confession, and died in prison in 1998 from complications caused by hepatitis C.

Dr. King was a key and very visible leader of the non-violent movement for civil rights and justice. He appeared often, unarmed, in public, and in constant danger. Dr. King was a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, pastor, humanitarian, true American hero, and more.

The correct person is celebrated yearly, on the third Monday in January.
