2012 Skywarn Weather Training
02/21/12
to
02/21/12
7:00 PM
to
9:00 PM

Are you responsible for outdoor activities? Do you want to know more about weather in our area? Join us at Skywarn Training. Ferris State, a National Weather Service Storm Ready University, and Mecosta County Emergency Management invite you to free training with the National Weather Service.

Skywarn is the National Weather Service (NWS) program of trained volunteer severe weather spotters.  Skywarn volunteers support their local community and government by providing the NWS with timely and accurate severe weather reports. These reports, when integrated with modern NWS technology, are used to inform communities of the proper actions to take as severe weather forms.

Skywarn, formed in the early 1970's, has historically provided critical severe weather information to the NWS in time to get the appropriate warnings issued. Thus, the key focus of the Skywarn program is to save lives and property through the use of the observations and reports of trained volunteers. (Gropper, 1993)

Despite the elaborate radar and forecasting equipment at the National Weather Service (NWS), the organization is only able to determine the potential for severe weather. The NWS relies on reports from the public and law enforcement.  Accurate and reliable information from the general public is difficult to obtain. Severe weather is complicated and confusing. The NWS has found that only regular training of weather spotters improves the quality of information.

The National Weather Service collaborates with amateur radio organizations and others to put together training programs. The NWS brings its weather knowledge, the Amateur Radio Service brings its expertise in emergency communications, and together they work with local governments and the Red Cross.

Becoming a NWS spotter is not a requirement to attend.

Benjamin Busch Presents the Film "Bright"
02/22/12
to
02/22/12
7:00 PM

Benjamin Busch of Reed City presents a screening of his latest film release, “Bright.”

Featured in the 2011 Traverse City Film Festival, “Bright” is a dramatic short film rich with imagery, cryptic dialogue, and a superb cast including such stars of HBO’s “The Wire” and “Generation Kill” as Robert Wisdom, Eric Nenninger, Glynn Turman, Andre Royo, Marc Menchaca, David Barrera, Rich McDonald and Busch.

Ed Burns, writer and executive producer of “The Wire” and “Generation Kill” described "Bright” as “a still-life painting brought to life. It is exquisitely shot, lovingly paced. The intense emotions play delicately on the faces of the actors, building to a subtle, well-earned catharsis. ‘Bright’ is art." The film is currently being featured at dozens of film festivals throughout the country and garnering numerous awards.

Actor, director, producer and writer Benjamin Busch majored in studio art at Vassar College and served in the United States Marine Corps before beginning a career in acting, appearing in the popular television programs “Party of Five,” “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “The West Wing.” In 2004, he began playing the role of Officer Anthony Colicchio on the HBO series “The Wire,” appearing in the final three seasons of the show. He later played the role of Major Todd Eckloff on the HBO mini-series “Generation Kill.” His first film as a writer and director, "Sympathetic Details," was released in February 2008.

For more information, contact Richard Scott Cohen at (231) 591-2484 or rscohen@ferris.edu.

This screening complements Busch’s work with Ferris State University acting students on techniques related to live stage performance in an in-class workshop.

Closing Reception Featuring "The Circle Unbroken"

02/26/12
7:00 PM

The closing reception of the 2012 Festival of the Arts will feature recognition of all Festival contest winners, the announcement of Haiku Contest winners and refreshments by VanBrocklin’s Bakery of Big Rapids.

The reception will feature Circle Unbroken, a non-denominational worship and artistic celebration of unity work, presented as the closing event of the 2012 Festival of the Arts.

The title describes the content of this piece: The world is envisioned as being filled with people broken apart from God and from each other. Through music, narration, graphic art, and dance, viewers first experience the tragedy of being in a world of division and hatred. Then, the piece brings to the audience the hope and possibility of being people who can again live in harmony with each other as God intends. The "broken circle" of relationships can be brought back to a "circle unbroken."

“The Circle Unbroken” incorporates words from many poets, lyricists and faith traditions.  Some of the music is familiar, and the audience is invited to sing along, but the work primarily features new music composed by Robert Garrels and Ronald Rizzo.  It is the first collaboration between the two composers and meant to portray the connection community members hold with each other as persons of local, national, and world communities. The work is intended as a community-building experience, and all performers and production supporters are from Big Rapids and the surrounding area.

The Circle Unbroken was first presented in January 2007.

For more information, contact Ed Mallett at (231) 7969-0712.

Participants will learn proper techniques and have the opportunity to make their own simple metal sculptures under the instruction of associate professor David Murray of Ferris' Welding Engineering Technology department.

Parking without permit is available directly south of the building, off of Ives St.

Pre-register for free admittance by calling (231) 591-2536 or emailing weisc@ferris.edu; class size is limited to 20 participants. All supplies donated by the Ferris Welding program. Safety gear will be available for purchase at the first class for approximately $25.

02/09/12
to
02/09/12
11:00 am
to
1:00 pm

An Office of Multicultural Student Services 2012 Black History Month presentation.

"Revolution '67" is an illuminating account of events too often relegated to footnotes in U.S. history — the black urban rebellions of the 1960s. Focusing on the six-day Newark, N.J. outbreak in mid-July, Revolution '67 reveals how the disturbances began as spontaneous revolts against poverty and police brutality and ended as fateful milestones in America's struggles over race and economic justice.

Voices from across the spectrum — activists Tom Hayden and Amiri Baraka, journalist Bob Herbert, Mayor Sharpe James (and other officials), National Guardsmen and Newark citizens — recall lessons as hard-earned then as they have been easy to neglect since. A co-production with the Independent Television Service (ITVS).

*The documentary screening and discussion is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.

Both of these issues have been much in the news lately.  Michigan lawmakers have taken up legislation that is a direct result of concern over student debt and the length of time it takes for degree completion, and President Obama has also brought these issues to the forefront by statements he has made regarding access to education.

These are questions of great concern to Ferris State University. These forums will provide an opportunity to look specifically at these issues within the larger framework of the challenges that exist with funding of public institutions of higher education.

The Bands and Music of Spain: A Multimedia Presentation with Llorenc Mendoza-Ruiz and Dr. Richard Scott Cohen
02/16/12
to
02/16/12
11:00 AM

Co-presented by Spanish guest conductor Llorenç Mendoza-Ruiz and Ferris' own Dr. Richard Scott Cohen, this lecture explores the artistic and cultural role of bands in Spanish society, where they perform symphonic masterworks as well as lighter folk, popular and festive musical styles to accompany the many holidays and festivals celebrated throughout the year.

Spain is a historical center of bands and band music. Popular among Napoleon's armies in the French Revolution, the band tradition took a special hold in the Valencia region of Spain.

Mendoza-Ruiz is an award-winning conductor throughout Spain and Europe, and Cohen is an award-winning Fulbright researcher on the Valencian band world. See separate listing on February 19 for a Ferris State Band concert featuring both conductors.

For more information, contact Richard Scott Cohen at (231) 591-2484 or rscohen@ferris.edu.

6:00 pm
to
7:30 pm

The Bullycide Project is based on the book Bullycide in America, complied by Brenda High and written by mothers who have lost a child to suicide due to excessive bullying. The statement by the director of this project, Lori Thompson, best describes the formation of the group and its purpose. She states that “This project and the process has been extraordinary. I would have never thought that a woman like me, along with 25 other individuals of all ages, would be sitting across from some incredibly brave, strong, and empowering parents who spoke to us with complete honesty and emotion. Witnessing their courage and conviction was the most awe-inspiring moment for me and the actors representing the stories in THE BULLYCIDE PROJECT.”

The Bullycide Project is a theatre production of character profiles of students who are bullied. It was created and is performed by the Trust Theatre Ensemble, which is dedicated to encompassing an audience of all ages while producing expressive, truthful, thought-provoking theatre that inspires a realization of self, while creating a change of consciousness on issues of humanity, integrity, tolerance, and trust. Our goal is to bring awareness to bullying and show the effect that it has on all individuals including college students. You are strongly encourage to attend this event as it pertains to all of us as we enter our careers and pass this message on.

This event is FREE thanks to Student Activity Fees as allocated by the Finance Division of Student Government.  Anyone with a disability who needs special accommodations to attend should contact 231-591-2606 at least 72 hours in advance.
