Diagnostic Medical Sonography Recognized for Program Excellence, Career Potential

Ferris State UniversityA leading resource provider for higher education information has included Ferris State University’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography training in its 2016-17 roster of “Top Ultrasound Technician Programs.”

Accreditedschoolsonline.com has determined that the Associate of Applied Science training in DMS, at Ferris, was ranked 29th among the top 50 programs that were based at four-year schools. Among the factors considered in their assessment are tuition and fees, graduation rates, student-teacher ratio and the number of complimentary programs or specialties offered by Ferris’ College of Health Professions.

Associate Professor Michelle Weemaes is DMS program coordinator, for Ferris, and said that the curriculum was established in 2002. Students often pursue another degree, certificate or minor while they await admission into the DMS program.

“DMS is a very popular program,” Weemaes said. “We have a two-to-three year waitlist, as students are sought after for positions in doctor’s offices, hospitals and other health care facilities.”

Ferris’ program plan has a year of clinical internship required for students to complete their AAS instruction.

“The final year is very important to our students’ career prospects,” Weemaes said. “Our students are guaranteed placement once they earn their degree.”

Accreditedschoolsonline.com cites U.S. Department of Labor Statistics projections that call for 27,000 new ultrasound technician job opportunities in the decade ending in 2024, which is a 24-percent increase. While there is a nationwide shortage of ultrasound technicians, a large majority of Ferris’ graduates are placed in the state of Michigan.

There are 159 accredited schools across the country that offer degrees in ultrasound technician studies, according to the 2016-17 report. Ferris’ DMS program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, upon the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
