Summer Internships: Nicole Black

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Ferris State UniversityNicole Black

She is: A senior from Bay City, Mich., preparing to graduate in December, majoring in Television and Digital Media Production. Nicole is also considering adding a Math minor.

Internship: Nicole is producing and editing wedding videos for Coastline Studios, a Grand Rapids, Mich.-based video production company.

What she is learning: “Tricks with Avid (video editing software).” Nicole said that her internship is providing her the opportunity to develop skills in keyboarding and effects. In her work editing wedding videos, Nicole has been exposed to diverse cultures, and has learned a great deal about film-making and editing, as well as producing content while staying in the background as the event takes place.

Which of Ferris State University’s core values does Nicole relate to in particular? She feels diversity has been a significant aspect of her education at Ferris, which continues in her internship. Nicole came from what she calls a “smaller high school,” and early post-secondary education at Delta College, to join Ferris’ Honors Program. This has allowed her to interact with a diverse group of students, as well as international students on campus.

What advice can you offer to other students about pursing success in their internships? “Be openminded about what you can gain from each experience. Accept every opportunity offered, and learn as much as you can. I had entered TDMP with aspirations of pursuing news gathering, and production. Being exposed to editing, and its creative freedoms has me looking into this kind of work in the long term, as well as other possibilities.”
