Rex and Tyler Schuberg are living emblems for “Home is Where the Dawg Is,” the theme
of Ferris State University’s 2015 homecoming celebration.
The father and son from Big Rapids, Mich. will serve as grand marshals for the homecoming parade Saturday, Sept. 26, and these Ferris alumni will travel past their family business, an insurance agency on Michigan Ave. on their way to Top Taggart Field, where they both earned varsity letters competing for the Bulldogs.
Rex Schuberg is a 1978 graduate of the College of Business with an Associate in Applied Science in Insurance and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He is a member of Ferris’ Presidents Society, a past president of the Ferris Alumni Association and a former chair of the Ferris Gridiron Club. Rex, a 1994 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, said that Ferris and the Big Rapids business community have collaborated on many projects to benefit the area.
“When the city of Big Rapids had its sesquicentennial, Ferris’ Architectural Design students, under Bruce Dilg’s guidance, were instrumental in producing the band shell,” Rex Schuberg said. “We were able to take their design and implement it for the community. That exemplifies a real working partnership.”
Rex earned three varsity letters on the Bulldog track team. He has towed floats on the homecoming parade route, and carried a blanket to collect donations from those standing on the curbside for the United Way. Schuberg said it is humbling to be invited to participate in this year’s celebration.
“It’s really an honor. I’m really looking to being grand marshal,” Rex said. “There’s always something special about homecoming and trying to get a win.”
Tyler is a 2004 graduate of the College of Business with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. The younger Schuberg said that he is proud to follow his in his father’s footsteps as a civic leader and supporter of the university. Tyler is among the organizers of Big Rapids’ Irish Fest, having chaired the second annual event held this past June. He has also served in leadership roles with the Big Rapids Downtown Business Association, the Big Rapids Jaycees and the Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as supporting the university’s political action committee, the Friends of Ferris.
“My grandfather taught us that it is about future generations, and what we leave to them,” Tyler said. “It’s important that we get involved, and make it better for the next generation.”
After starring at Big Rapids High School, Tyler lettered as a receiver on the Bulldog football team. He plans to attend the bonfire on Friday, Sept. 25 and said he will be an exuberant supporter of his alma mater.
“This is something that is really special to both of us, Big Rapids as a community and Ferris State. They hold a special place in our heart,” Tyler said. “To be a part of that celebration, to be part of the excitement that goes around the bonfire, we’re just ready to bring out the chant, ‘Hey there, wait a minute! Gotta put some Dawg in it.’”
