Freezing for a Cause Event is Set for Feb. 18

Ferris State UniversityThe Ferris State University community can brave the cold weather as part of "Freezing for a Cause" on Wednesday, Feb. 18 from 9 to 11 p.m., on the North Campus Quad to benefit Women’s Information Service, Inc. of Big Rapids.

Freezing for a Cause is an annual event hosted by the University’s Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. organizations. Music will be played during the event for the crowd to to remain energized in the cold weather.

“We do this event so that we can experience what the homeless deal with on a daily basis, especially in the winter so that is why the location is North Quad,” said Jasmine Davis, senior in Accountancy and Computer Information Systems from Canton, Mich. “At this event, we stand around a barrel of fire and try to stay warm. We also provide hot chocolate and s'mores.”

People in attendance are asked to bring non-perishable food items and slightly worn clothes and shoes to donate to WISE.

“We chose to donate to WISE because we would like to help the community since we are all Ferris students and they could always use some items. The donations we received are usually old, decent clothing but we also take canned foods as well,” Davis said. “In addition to donations, participants who donate and stay to experience the cold, will be given volunteer hours.”

This event is free and open to the public.
