Mercantile Bank Intern Advises Those Seeking Similar Opportunities to be Open-Minded

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet: Amir Jairazbhoy

Amir Jairazbhoy

He is: A senior from Farmington Hills, Mich. studying Marketing.

Internship: An intern for the Treasury Department with Mercantile Bank in Grand Rapids, where their main headquarter office is. The treasury department deals with business and commercial customers outside of their loans. They help with payments, collections, pay roll, ACH, whatever they need in terms of cash management or online support.

What he is learning: He has been learning about how the online support and treasury support works, as well as making proposals and communicate with customers about any changes. He gets to talk to a lot of business owners, which has helped expand his knowledge of communicating with business professionals within a professional work environment.

How Ferris helped: Ferris has provided general knowledge and skills to help him with his internship. Anything from his marketing classes, to his management classes to a business information systems classes. He has to trouble-shoot customer issues and can take control with scanners or other banking products they offer.

His future plans: Jairazbhoy is excited for the future, and would like to continue a career with Mercantile Bank once he finishes the rest of his credits for his senior year. He would like to stay within financial services, and will weigh every opportunity he has.

His advice: Be open to all opportunities, you never know where it will take you. This internship has turned into more than an internship, he has bettered himself, gained knowledge and a lot of people he connects with. If you choose the right company, it can show you where you want to be and how you want to get there.
