Ferris Student, Big Rapids Native Earns Grand Rapids Community Foundation Scholarship

Tara Nunamaker, a Ferris State University student and Big Rapids native, was awarded one of two $10,000 Fred and Lena Meijer scholarships by the Grand Rapids Community Foundation.

“If you enjoy the challenge of the day, you can have a lot of fun,” Fred Meijer said. “We hope our Meijer Scholarship winners enjoy the challenges that education will provide and are pleased that this financial assistance will help them accomplish their goals.”

Tara NunamakerThe competitive scholarship fund benefits Meijer team members and their children. This year, 171 scholarships were awarded in the five-state area where Meijer has stores. All but two of the awards are $2,500 – the two are $10,000 each. Nunamaker won one of the two. The second $10,000 scholarship was awarded to a student from Dayton Ohio.

Grand Rapids Community Foundation, the Grand Rapids area’s largest scholarship provider, this year broke the $1 million mark for the first time in history. The foundation awarded 642 scholarships for a total $1,099,400, more than double the $544,500 distributed just six years ago.

Ferris students received $54,000 in scholarship monies from the Grand Rapids Community Foundation.
