Dear Ferris State University Students:
At the beginning of every fall semester, you receive a letter from me wishing you the best over the course of your academic year. I know that your year will be filled with a long list of accomplishments and a few new challenges.
In the past several years as Dean of Student Life, I've learned that behind every student's face at Ferris there is a story. Through our University's mission and core values, coupled with our programmatic initiatives and commitment to you, we should all want to learn these exciting stories.
As you embark on this new chapter, I would encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities and experiences that are waiting for you this year:
It is my privilege to connect with every face that I encounter this year. Take a moment and think about how you would feel if every person you encountered at Ferris or in the Big Rapids community made a positive connection with you and/or if you made a positive connection with them. I invite all of you to take on this challenge. I believe, the result of these efforts would reflect that each member of our community is valued. Through our actions, and compassion for others, Ferris will continue to be a great place to live and learn.
When you decide to take on this challenge, you will experience a positive, nurturing and student centered environment, which is one of the basic foundations of my role as the Dean of Student Life. The attitude of professionalism, respect, and efficient service permeates our campus from the classrooms to residence halls to the Big Rapids community. Striving for excellence in and outside of the classroom sets the stage for a community that cares. As a member of the Ferris community you can and we should expect openness, honesty and trust in all of our interactions.
While you learn about your academic area of interest, connect your learning with your out-of-class experiences to assist you as you grow professionally and personally. Across the University, we are called to instill in you such behaviors as integrity, good character, respect, responsible choices, and a healthy mind, body and spirit. Most of all, we want you to share your story both individually and collectively.
Always remember, the world needs leaders for tomorrow and visionaries for the future.
Woodbridge N. Ferris set off to "Make the World Better" and I challenge all of you to make an impact during this upcoming year. Feel free to contact me at 231/591-2088 or firstname.lastname@example.org, if you have a question, concern, or suggestion for how I can be even more supportive during your time at FSU.
