Ferris State University alumna Caitlin Hutchison will present “The Cross of Scriptures:
Power Meets Religion in Medieval Ireland” at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25 as part of
the Humanities Colloquium Series.
Her thesis and research from her master’s degree at this month’s Humanities Colloquium Series is “The Cross of Scriptures: Power Meets Religion in Medieval Ireland.”
In the presentation, in the Rankin Art Gallery in the Rankin Student Center, Hutchison will discuss the “Cross of the Scriptures,” one of Ireland’s most important High Crosses, along with her research and experiences while completing her master’s degree in Art History in Ireland. Admission is free and open to the public.
Hutchison, who graduated from Ferris in 2009, majored in History and minored in Art History and Political Science. During her time at Ferris, she was awarded History Student of the Year. Hutchison was also a member of the women’s basketball team, the Honors College, Phi Alpha Theta, Club History and was president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. She recently graduated from the University of Notre Dame with her master’s degree in Art History. She received a grant to complete her thesis research in Ireland.
“We usually have faculty present each month, but this time we had the opportunity to work with an alumna,” said Rachel Foulk, an assistant professor and organizer of the Humanities Colloquium Series. “It’s a great chance for Ferris to welcome her back and celebrate, and for current students to see what is possible for their future.”
The Humanities Colloquium Series is a monthly event that allows faculty to share research, scholarship and creative activities with the Ferris and Big Rapids communities. Foulk said that the Humanities department is very diverse, so presentations can include history, communications, philosophy, music and more.
