Health is the focus of the 19th annual conference being hosted on Thursday, March 15 by Ferris State University student organization You Beautiful Black Woman.
“Health: Physical, Mental and Financial,” is the theme of this year’s YBBW conference, scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Rankin Student Center. Keynote speaker Tony Gaskins will discuss the mental, Kimberly Brown will focus on the physical and Charles Major will speak on the financial aspects of health. Gaskins is an author, consultant, motivational speaker, producer and screenwriter. Brown is a certified personal trainer and co-owner of Keep it Moving Fitness, LLC. Major is author of the book “Become a Mogul: 7 Major Success Principles for the Urban Entrepreneur.”
“This event will be more than a social gathering. This also is a movement with an outstanding learning experience,” said Breanna Alexander, a junior from Detroit. “We want those who attend to learn how to live a healthy lifestyle: financially, mentally and physically.”
The conference also will feature entertainment, hors d’oeuvres, refreshments and vendors. Students, faculty, staff and community members are welcome to attend this free event.
One goal of the YBBW annual conference is to reach out to a diverse range of people.
“We decided to go with this theme because as a culture we tend to believe that to be healthy all you need is good physical health,” Alexander said. “If you lack a stable mentality or finances, however, those can have major impacts on a person.”
The conference begins with a welcome at 5 p.m. Brown is scheduled to speak at 5:15 p.m. in Rankin 238, Major will speak at 6:15 p.m. in Rankin 252, and Gaskins will address those gathered at 7:15 p.m. followed by closing remarks and giveaways in Rankin 240.
The event is sponsored in part by Student Activity Fees as allocated by the Finance Division of Student Government. Anyone with a disability who needs special accommodations to attend this event should call (231) 591-2606.
