The sounds of Broadway, jazz, marches and more will resonate this summer during performances by the Ferris Community Summer Band, which kicks off its 47th concert season on Wednesday, June 6.
Sponsored by Ferris State University as part of its “Music for Life!” initiative, the band serves as an outreach to the Big Rapids community. Area adults, Ferris students, students from local high schools and middle school students with band experience are welcome to participate.
“It’s not just music, but a way of uniting the community,” said Richard Scott Cohen, director of the Ferris Community Band and an associate professor of Music at Ferris, who also serves as director of Instrumental Concert Ensembles.
Cohen said that the band can range from 30 to 40 musicians, who are invited to perform in as many concerts as possible.
“I used to call the summer band concerts my grey hair season,” Cohen said. “I take a leap of faith every week, but over the years our turnout has gotten better and better.”
Concerts, which are free and open to the public, begin at 7 p.m. and are held at various locations through July 3. All concerts support community efforts such as the annual Mecosta County Medical Center Auxiliary Community Block Party and the Roof Replacement Project at the Old Jail.
