Horn Takes the Reins of University Recreation as Director

pictureBIG RAPIDS – After a national search, Cindy Horn has been appointed director of University Recreation. She had served as the interim director since December 2007.

Horn earned her bachelor’s in Recreation Management and Leisure Studies, and her master’s in Experiential Education from Ferris. Most recently, she served as director of Student Leadership and Activities from 2004-07.

She also was named the 2008 Woman of the Year by the Ferris Professional Women, who annually recognize an outstanding woman on campus who has stimulated the awareness of women by participating in activities to enhance the status of all women, encouraging women to exercise their rights and roles in the Ferris community, and continuing to be a model of professionalism to students and other colleagues.

“Cindy has demonstrated a strong commitment to meeting the needs of students, faculty, staff and community members,” Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs Daniel Burcham said.

Horn has been involved in such campus activities as Select 60, Vagina Monologues and Take Back the Night. She also has been a supporter of Women’s History Month, the Sister Stroll and Tunnel of Oppression. Additionally, she has been a driving force behind Welcome Week activities and has served as advisor to the Homecoming Committee.

“There are very few people that care as much about students as Cindy Horn,” said Matt Eickhoff, interim director of Student Leadership and Activities, when Horn was named FPW Woman of the Year. “She’s an advocate for the school and in supporting a well-rounded university experience for students both in and outside the classroom.”

Horn is a graduate of Ferris who has invested her energy and time, and is dedicated to the University, Eickhoff added, saying it was her mentorship which has given him the tools to be successful in his position today.
