High schoolers test welding skills during Ferris-hosted competition

BIG RAPIDS – More than 100 students from 25 high schools will descend upon the Ferris State University Welding Lab on May 9 to compete for more than $30,000 in academic scholarships and prizes during the sixth annual State Secondary Welding Competition.

High school students from across the state of Michigan will not only have a chance to showcase their welding skills but also check out the post-secondary opportunities available at Ferris, said Jeff Carney, Welding Engineering Technology department chair and associate professor.

“Many former competitors now attend Ferris,” Carney added, noting approximately 25 current Welding Engineering Technology students will be on-hand to provide assistance during the event.
