BIG RAPIDS - The Ferris State University Student Volunteer Center and Women's Information Services, Inc. is hosting the 17th annual Take Back the Night march and rally starting at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 3 to say "no" to domestic violence and sexual assault.
The night will begin on the Campus Quad where participants can create signs for the march. The march will start in the Quad, travel down Cedar Street and back to the Rankin Student Center Dome Room for a rally to raise awareness on this issue, which left 54 people dead in Michigan in 2006.
Last year, domestic violence claimed the lives of 35 women, 15 men and 4 children in Michigan. According to Nichole Wheelock, Ferris student and an organizer of the event, the rally will consist of a short presentation regarding the event and the topic of domestic abuse and sexual assault, the reading of the names of those who have lost their lives this past year to domestic violence, and a speak out, which is an opportunity for individuals to share their stories anonymously for the attendees of the event.
The event aims to raise awareness about domestic violence and the impacts on the family and community. Ultimately, it is working towards bringing an end to domestic violence and sexual assault, Wheelock added.
