Wireless Networking - Big Rapids Campus

The Ferris State University wireless network is accessible for all faculty, staff, administration, and students. It is currently available at most outdoor locations, and has been deployed within many buildings, including the common areas of the residence halls. When connecting to FerrisWiFi

If it asks to select an encryption, select WPA2 before entering your username and password. 

Supported Public Networks

When searching for available public networks, be sure you connect to a supported network device. Ferris access points are named the same throughout campus to allow for quick identification.

FerrisWiFi      

  • Secure (encrypted)
    • Case-sensitive passcode = FerrisWiFi
  • Available in all academic and administrative buildings
  • Available to Employees and Students
  • Requires ID and Password
  • Must register devices with network to connect
  • Access to FerrisConnect and MyFSU
  • Students must have an approved antivirus program and critical Windows' patches installed
  • Requires Bradford Persistent Agent, except for on mobile devices
  • Can register up to 5 devices

 

FSUStudent

  • Secure (encrypted) 
    • Case-sensitive passcode - FSUStudent 
  • Provided by the University in these select on-campus residence locations
  • Available to Employees and Students
  • Requires ID and Password
  • Must register devices with network to connect
  • Access to FerrisConnect and MyFSU
  • Students must have an approved antivirus program and all critical Windows' patches installed
  • Requires Bradford Persistent Agent, except for on mobile devices
  • Can register up to 5 devices

 

FSU_Public

  • Not Secure, use at your own risk
  • Available in FLITE and Sports Complex year-round
  • Available during Orientation in CSS and IRC
  • Doesn't require a Ferris Computing ID or password
  • No registration required
  • Access to MyFSU and Library resources but not FerrisConnect
  • For concert goers and sporting event attendees
  • Devices are not checked for antivirus programs or Windows' patches
  • Use for non-Ferris related Internet Access

 

Supported Private Networks

Wireless access points (WAPs) can be purchased by students from the Student Technology Services department. These devices will allow you to connect wirelessly while in a residence hall room.  Certain residence halls already have wireless throughout, including student rooms, so you may not need to purchase your own WAP. Devices configured by the STS group all use a specific naming scheme. (If you have purchased a wireless device from a location other than the STS, you will need to configure it using the provided instructions.)

Unsupported Networks

While searching for a wireless network you may come across a number of unsecured connections; the names will likely be Linksys, D-link, or Workgroup. Due to security concerns, the University does not support any unsecured connections. Be advised that the use of an unsecured network by a person other than the network owner is considered by some branches of law enforcement as illegal.
