Upgrading Office 2010 to Office 2013

Starting December 6th, a new icon will be appearing on university owned computers that faculty/staff use. It is for the upgrade from Office 2010 to 2013 on Windows 7 computers.

Office Installer icon

You can chose to install the new version whenever it is convenient for you, any time before January 17, 2014. On January 17th, ITS plans to push the upgrade out to any faculty/staff computers that have not already upgraded. We would appreciate it if you could install Office 2013 before you leave for winter break. The installation takes about 20 minutes.

Be sure you close any applications you have open before starting the installation. Then, click on the "MS Office 2013 Installer" deployment icon on your office computer. Office 2010 will be removed when you install Office 2013. Your computer will reboot after installation is complete.

This installation is available for faculty and staff with Ferris Windows 7 computers in the Big Rapids, Traverse City, Grand Rapids (ATC and GRx), and Flint offices.

Please review the following Q and A's for more details.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Technology Assistance Center at (231) 591-4822 or toll free at (877) 779-4822.

Why must I install Microsoft Office 2013?

We are preparing for the switch from Lotus Notes to Office 365 in March by installing Microsoft Office 2013 now, before the big switch. Office 2010 will not work with the new email system very well.

What is the difference between Microsoft Office 2013 and Microsoft Office 365?

Microsoft Office 2013 are the applications you are used to using on your desktop, such as Word, PowerPoint, Access and Excel. Microsoft Office 365 is the "collaboration" and mobile device tools, like email and calendaring, conferencing, etc. We are only upgrading the desktop apps now through January, then in February and March we will be adding on the tools to be using Office 365.

How long does the installation take?

The installation takes 20-30 minutes, and your computer will automatically reboot when the installation is complete.

To whom does this apply?

This installation is available for faculty and staff with Ferris Windows 7 computers in the Big Rapids, Traverse City, Grand Rapids (ATC and GRx), and Flint offices. Labs/classroom computers will not be affected. The installer will not appear on computers running Windows XP or Mac OS X. Mac users, and faculty and staff from Kendall and other satellite areas will receive additional information about installation options at a later date.

What if I am using an Access 2010 database – will it work with Access 2013?

We do not recommend it. Do not run the MS Office 2013 installer. Contact TAC and indicate the name of the database and its location if you want to have Office 2013 installed without the Access 2013 upgrade.

What about Visio and Project?

These will be updated at a later date.

Where can I get training on these applications?
