Ensuring the correct version of Java is installed

Symptoms

  • When receiving a "Session Expired" error message when you are trying to use Chat. This prevents the user from using Chat.

Determining which version(s) of Java is installed (XP/Vista)

  1. Open up Control Panel via the Start Menu.

If Control Panel is in "Category Mode", on the left side of the window click "Switch to Classic View"

  1. Double Click the Java Icon
    • Goto the "Java" tab
    • Under Java Application Runtime Settings, click "View"
  2. This window tells the user which version(s) of Java are installed. (Image)

Determining which version(s) of Java is installed (Windows 7)

  1. Open up Control Panel via the Start Orb button.

If Control Panel is in Category mode, click Category in the "View by:" heading in the upper right corner. Switch to either Small Icons or Large Icons view.

  1. Click the Java Icon
    • Click on the "Java" tab.
    • Under Java Applet Runtime Settings, click the "View..." button.
      • This window tells the user which version(s) of Java are installed.
  2. It is recommended that "1.6.0_17" is the only version installed.
    • NOTE: If there are multiple versions of Java installed AND 1.6.0_17 is listed, then a quick and temporary remedy would be to uncheck all of the boxes on the right except for the one belonging to 1.6.0_17.

Removing Java

  1. Open up Control Panel via the Start Menu.
  2. Open up "Add/Remove Programs" on Windows XP or "Programs and Features" on Windows Vista/7
  3. Scroll down the list and remove any entries that start with Java (Image)
NOTE: It is not necessary to reboot between removing each entry, however after the last version is removed, it is important that you do reboot. FerrisConnect will not work until you do.

Installing Java 1.6 update 5

This version should only be installed in conjunction with Java 1.6 update 17 if you are a user of Kronos at Ferris State University.

By downloading Java you acknowledge that you have read and accepted the terms of the end user license agreement
  1. Follow this link to download Java 1.6 update 5
    • Right click on the link and click "Open in New Window" will keep you on this page.
  2. Towards the bottom, click on the "Download JRE" link
    • Platform: Windows
    • Language: Multi-language
    • Agree to the Software License Agreement and click continue
  3. Click on the link that says "jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe"
  4. Save and run the file. The setup will guide you through installing Java.
