Jon Oaks

My name is Jon Oaks and I was a mathematics tutor in the Academic Support Center from 2003 to 2005. I enjoyed tutoring in the ASC and all of the opportunities available to improve my tutoring skills. I know that CRLA tutor certification not only helped me to become a better tutor, but a better overall person. For example, knowing what to look for in terms of what type of learning styles that people have –- kinesthetic, visual, or auditory –- is something that has been helpful to me far outside the walls of academia.

After graduating from Ferris I attended Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. I received my Masters in Statistics in 2007 and have been working on my Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics since then. However, I am currently looking for a full-time job, as I wish to finish my Ph.D. on a part-time basis. I encourage everyone who is able to be a lifelong learner. You don’t necessarily need to get a Ph.D., but just take advantage of all of the learning opportunities that surround you. I am sure that even your local library has a free class or two that may be of interest to you.
